Lotus Symphony Relaunches as an Open Source Office Suite »
Posted by: TechnologyExpert 11 months agoAnyone remember Lotus Symphony, the DOS-based follow-up to Lotus 1-2-3? Today IBM announced it was relaunching the Symphony application suite, this time as open source, driven off of last week's announcement of its new membership in OpenOffice.org.

It's about time that someone stepped up to the plate. The only problem(s) is/are compatibility with the tons and tons of Microsoft Office materials already in the field and being generated as we speak. And will it run properly under Windows? How far back is it compatible? Wlll there have to be many, many third parties generating translation code? Will it also run under Linux? If it is open source, then can whoever gets it modify it to need? Real can of worms.

OpenOffice supports Linux and Windows, so since it's based on that, this suite will do the same. It's a good move to use OpenOffice as the core, as that's a relatively mature product. I actually wouldn't worry much about file compatibility.
