Interesting question: What would have to happen to Linux to become an extension of Google?
One answer ... invoke a runtime Linux via the Google Toolbar.
Another ... run a Linux kernel that works as an offline version of Google Docs, that either replicates, or syncs when online.
Yet more ... implement a distributed Linux on the desktop with a thin client, that runs like torrents.
The real trick is to just run linux in it's own sizable window -- as a portable app.
No doubt there are dozens of other ways. Any thoughts?

I believe that at some stage, the Linux kernel will/can be used to handle hardware probing, be carried (with the settings) on a USB stick to fit any PC (this has been possible for over a year) and then start a browser session that connects to a remote server which also supplies applications and storage space. Microsoft is looking at all these areas at the moment (Live apps, USB for settings, according to their new partnership), but it's well behind in that respect. It also understands that this might be the (only) way to go. Ballmer said he is most afraid of Linux and Google, not Apple. Even Red Hat launched Global, which resembles the Google/Linux model.
Interesting thoughts, hiscity.
