As a photographer who has taken and printed many black and white film photos, I've never been happy with the quality I have seen of black and white photos taken from a color digital camera. iPhoto has an automatic Black and White mode in the Effects Palette. In one click the color is stripped out of your photo. I just don't like how it looks.
