New Feature Teaser: Sink and Retract - The Netscape Blog »
Posted by: ck 1 year, 8 months agoTomorrow we're adding two new features to the site: The ability to add a Sink vote to stories you do not like and the ability to retract an accidental vote. "You now have the option to not only Vote for stories you like, but add a Sink vote to stories you don't like. This sink vote doesn't affect the actual ranking of the story, but each story will note whether it has mostly positive or mostly negative ratings above the story title, and it will list the number of votes to the number of sinks."

Dec. 19, 2006, 5:45 p.m.Dang, I voted for this story, but now I'm not so sure that was the right thing to do. Oh, how I wish there was a way to go back...

Dec. 19, 2006, 8:40 p.m.omg I can't wait for this... are you going to list who sank a story!!?!?! it would be great if it was transparent (unlike the digg bury feature... )

Dec. 19, 2006, 6:36 p.m.Well if you submit a story you automagically vote on it. BUT you could submit a story, retract your vote, and then Sink it.
-

Dec. 19, 2006, 6:40 p.m.It's also worth clarifying that a "sink" does not make the number of votes go down. It simply increases the number of sinks that the story has. So a story could have zero votes if the submitter retracts his or her vote, but it could never have a negative amount of votes.

Dec. 19, 2006, 5:55 p.m.I think the Netscape community will like these new features. Hats off to the 'Dev' Team.

Dec. 20, 2006, 4:19 p.m.BeefJ,
You are cracking me up today in an insane way. You just keep piling up all the negatives- but not from me today. lol

Dec. 20, 2006, 1:53 p.m.I was actually worried about the sink feature as well, but I was assured that it will not affect the submission in any way, but will only serve to show who may not be happy about the submission.
Now, if your "sinks" affected the story overall, then we would have a problem.

Dec. 20, 2006, 2:42 p.m.They "graying out" concerns me as well. Upon further reflection, I don't think people will be on their best behavior. In an effort to avoid creating ill will, I suspect many will create dummy profiles for the sole purpose of sinking stories. Their original profile will be remain free of any negative fallout.
I'm really not too keen on how this feature will benefit NS, nor am I sure if it's worth my time "sinking" stories. I may not even use it at all.

Dec. 21, 2006, 4:46 a.m.Well Yes/No!
Now these features came up 20 December 2006. Yes is nice to retract a Vote or Sink. That can be 'kool'.
The negative, are a group can ban together, to sink stories for 'political reasons' without bothering to have read the story itself.

Dec. 20, 2006, 2:20 a.m.I think I'll like this.
One other change I'd like to see, is if you feel compelled to give someones comment a negative vote by clicking their "Bad" button, then the post should not "vanish". Leave it up just like the "good" comments. Sometimes another reader will reply to something in that post and it's nice to be able to review what the original post was, even if you do think it is bad. It goes completely against the whole concept of the Netscape forums where differing views from all sides are invited and encouraged. Other have a right to disagree with me and I have a right to disagree with them. Just because I don't like/agree with something they said, doesn't mean Netscape should "act on my behalf" and prevent it from showing up on my computer.
If it truly is offensive and needs to be removed, then that is what the Report button is for.

Dec. 20, 2006, 4:07 p.m.I agree with you on this one. At the very least, I was surprised to see the comment vanish when I first gave someone a bad rating. I'll discuss with the other devs.

Dec. 20, 2006, 7:58 a.m.:( I'm sinking!!
:) What are you sinking??
:( I am sinking this is not necessary!!
-

JasonCalacanis
Dec. 20, 2006, 12:26 p.m.It should balance out at the end of the day. Also, it's going to be 100% transparent, so just like the system balanced out for votes it will balance out for votes and sinks.
Also, you have the Netscape team watching the system, so if it gets abused the abuse will dealt with just like it is today with group voting, sock puppets, etc.
I have great faith in the Netscape team to keep the system open, fair, and transparent.
Compare Netscape to digg where they don't event talk to the users about the new features and specific cases of problems.
My suggestion: look at the track record and judge on that... not the worst case scenario.

Dec. 20, 2006, 3:13 p.m.Why not add a feature that identifies members who are giving our comments ratings? Like luv and ZG, I've gotten negative ratings on comments even before the edit button disappears - on posts well below the Homepage radar.

Dec. 20, 2006, 11:08 a.m.I'm antsy.
How much longer 'til I can vote to "sink" that "Tara and The Donald" story?
-

Taganan
Dec. 20, 2006, 2:31 p.m.As long as the negative votes and positive votes are transparent and if it could be expessed as a percentage of good versus bad it would be nice to have this. There are some atrocious items posted which are not news or opinion and need to be voted down in ratings.
-

Dec. 20, 2006, 3:09 p.m.With apologies to rumple4: Will you 'sink' any story about rubber duckies, lead, or the Titanic? Can we commission Rodin to sculpt "The Sinker"? Or only do it everywhere but in the kitchen? i.e. "Everything but the kitchen sinker?"
What am I sinking? No, I'll leave it to you when the feature is activated.

Dec. 20, 2006, 3:41 p.m.I just sunk this story, for testing purposes. ;)
This will be an interesting day. :D

Dec. 20, 2006, 3:45 p.m.So where can I find who did the sinking here? I thought that was to be visible to us?

Dec. 20, 2006, 4:08 p.m.one option is to retract your votes then sink the stories. That'll give the homepage a nice, uniform sea of gray. lol!!

Maybe Armatures will stop the page drift?!?!

Dec. 20, 2006, 5:28 p.m.I like the vote retraction part of it. I agree with ZG, Luv and others that the "Sink" feature will be abused. I see people using the feature mostly for retaliations. Anyhow, like Jason said, lets wait and see.
Please hold the bad ratings for this comment. lol
